This piece was a direct follow up to Sonata No. 1. The Pittsburgh Organ Artists’ Series held a competition seeking a work that would be both appropriate for church services as well as concerts. Being encouraged by a friend who was well acquainted with the first sonata, a second sonata was started. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this work is that the opening measures and motif of the Scherzo were written in 2006. This idea did not go anywhere at the time, but a good composer knows a good idea when they see it. This old idea was the real catalyst for completing the entire work. The piece was premiered by the composer in August of 2018 during the St. Paul Cathedral summer concert series in Pittsburgh, PA.
