Program Notes:

The Prelude and Fugue in A major is modeled after German Baroque idioms in organ composition. The Prelude contains pedal notes, cadenzas, and echoes that Dietrich Buxtehude, Nicholas Bruhns, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck and other organist composers of the North German School made famous. The Fugue is modeled after Johann Sebastian Bach, particularly the fugue in a minor (BWV 543). The piece is dedicated to Jaehee Kim who played the organ for the premier of The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross. Jaehee’s name is the inspiration for the fugue subject (J = C#, A = A, E = E, H = B, EE = E, K = D, I = B and M = F#) and her first name is declared at the final cadence in the last six chords.
